What causes varicocele?

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing testicular pain recently. It feels like the left testicle is higher and swollen compared to the right. There's a soft lump-like sensation above the left testicle. I often feel tired and painful, always have the urge to urinate, and also have discomfort in the lower abdomen. Could it be varicocele?

Doctor's answer:

If you only feel a soft lump in the left testicle, it doesn't necessarily mean it's varicocele, because if it were varicocele, you would see worm-like dilated veins on the surface of the testicle. Moreover, varicocele typically presents with a heavy, sensation, while pain is relatively uncommon. In terms of advice, your current condition is unlikely to be varicocele. It may be mild epididymitis instead. You would be better off getting an ultrasound of the testicle to get a clear picture.
