[Preface] Computer networks are an interdisciplinary field that combines computer technology and communication technology. They serve as the foundational platform for information technology and are one of the fastest-growing areas in modern science and technology. With the widespread application of computer networks, an increasing number of non-computer majors in higher education institutions are selecting courses in computer networks. The goal of this book is to provide an introductory textbook on computer networks for undergraduate and graduate students in non-computer disciplines, enabling them to understand the basic knowledge and development of computer networks while mastering the use and configuration of related software. The book aims to balance fundamental principles and practical operations, making it a foundational textbook for network culture. In terms of content selection, the book focuses on knowledge related to the basic concepts of computer networks, as well as network application issues and techniques that non-computer professionals may encounter in their work. In the foundational knowledge section, the book avoids in-depth theoretical discussions, instead emphasizing the improvement of network literacy. In the application section, the use and configuration of software are equally emphasized, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of the functions of related software while mastering the operations. Additionally, the book includes basic knowledge of Intranets and e-commerce to lay the groundwork for future studies in related courses.
The book is divided into eight chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the basic knowledge of computer networks and the fundamental concepts of data communication, covering topics such as an overview of computer networks, network topology, data communication basics, WAN technology, and network architecture. Chapter 2 focuses on local area networks (LANs), briefly describing their characteristics, structure, and components before emphasizing the widely used Ethernet. It also briefly introduces token ring networks, token bus networks, switched LANs, virtual LANs, FDDI, client/server models, and structured cabling systems. Finally, it briefly introduces distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) as a technology for metropolitan area networks (MANs).
Chapter 3 discusses the basic concepts of network interconnection and interconnection devices before focusing on Internet technology, including its fundamental concepts, protocol architecture, and basic services. Chapter 4 introduces network operating systems, providing a concise overview of their basic concepts and typical examples, with Windows 2000 used as an example to explain some important concepts and operations. Chapter 5 covers the use of the Internet, including access methods, the use of Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express, as well as methods for downloading and uploading files and typical software.
Chapter 6 introduces web design techniques, starting with the basic concepts of web pages and briefly discussing HTML, while also introducing the basic use of FrontPage 2000 and Flash software to prepare readers for future courses. Chapter 7 covers the basic concepts of network management and security, as well as Windows 2000 security and management, using a specific example to explain the concept and configuration of firewalls. Chapter 8 briefly introduces the basic concepts of Intranets and e-commerce, laying the foundation for further study in e-commerce courses.
For ease of learning, each chapter includes a small number of exercises, and the appendix provides answers to some of the questions for reference. Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 were written by Zhu Haisheng, while Chapters 4 and 7 were written by Dong Zhen. Due to the authors' limited expertise, errors may inevitably exist in the book. We sincerely welcome readers to point out any mistakes.
