Features: Lu Xun (1881-1936), a writer, thinker, and revolutionary. Originally named Zhou Zhangshou, he styled himself Yucai and later changed his name to Shuren. He was from Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Born into a declining scholar-official family, Lu Xun adopted the pen name "Lu Xun" in 1918 when he published "The Madman's Diary." In 1898, he studied in Nanjing, and in 1902, he went to Japan for medical studies. Later, he felt that curing the numb spirit of the nation was more important than treating physical illnesses, so he switched careers to advocate for literary movements. In October 1927, he settled in Shanghai and engaged in literary writing, participating in the organization of the Chinese Left-Wing Writers League. He became the practical leader and banner of the Chinese Left-Wing cultural movement and emerged as a great figure in China's cultural revolution during the struggle against the Nationalist Party's cultural "encirclement." Narrow Road to the West is a collection of short stories written by Lu Xun from 1918 to 1922. At that time, the spirit of the May Fourth Revolution was at its peak. The author intended to write novels to depict "the unhappy people in a sick society," "reveal the suffering to draw attention to its cure," and to "shout for the New Culture Movement." The works truthfully portray the social life from the Xinhai Revolution to the May Fourth period, revealing deep social contradictions, offering a profound critique and complete negation of the feudal system and outdated traditional concepts, and expressing a strong sense of national survival and a fervent desire for social change.
