Author: Shang Binghe
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2006-01-01
Features: The ten-volume Ancient Divination in the I Ching and the twenty-volume Shang School of I Ching Studies are based on the annotated edition by Mr. Huang Shouqi and the Zhonghua Book Company edition, respectively. They incorporate other printed versions and particularly reference Mr. Zhang Shanwen's annotated Collected Works of the Shang School of I Ching Studies for mutual collation, striving for completeness. For example, in Volume 7 of Ancient Divination in the I Ching, there are twenty-one entries from Xu Shifeng's Divination Not Reaching the Throne to Confucius Divining for the Five Sons of Shangqu, which were absent in the original publication. These have now been supplemented based on Collected Works of the Shang School of I Ching Studies, making the text complete. Additionally, Explanations of I Ching Images in the Zuo Zhuan and Guo Yu has been moved from Shang School of I Ching Studies to Ancient Divination in the I Ching, ensuring that ancient divination cases from the Spring and Autumn period to the Ming and Qing dynasties are seamlessly connected over two thousand years. The style of The Transmission of the Elder of Zixi and Yu Shengyu's Collected Works of the Shang School of I Ching Studies (Shang School of I Ching Studies of the I Ching) has been revised and included as appendices at the end of the book, along with Shang Xiang's Letters to Huang Zhili and the concluding Postscript, for reference. Other improvements have also been made, though they are not elaborated upon here. The original book was in traditional vertical characters, but it has now been converted to simplified horizontal characters. The original text had numerous missing characters, which have all been supplemented. For instance, in the Zuo Zhuan chronology, the original often omitted the character "gong" after the names of rulers like Zhao Gong, Xiang Gong, and Heng Gong, which has now been corrected for easier reference. Similarly, when Shang scholars listed the hexagrams Jiji and Weiji together, they often abbreviated them as "Ji, Weiji," which has been fully restored. Other corrections have been made as well, but they are not detailed here.
