Henry James was born in New York in 1843, with Scottish and Irish ancestry. His father was a renowned theologian and philosopher, and his brother William was also known for his philosophical works. He attended school in New York before moving to London, Paris, and Geneva. In 1862, he entered Harvard Law School, and in 1865, he began writing reviews and short stories for American magazines. In 1875, he settled in Paris for a year, where he met Flaubert, Turgenev, and other famous literary figures. A year later, he moved to London and became a prominent figure in high society. In 1898, he left London for Sussex, where he lived. In 1915, Henry James became a British citizen and received the Order of Merit. He died in 1916. The protagonist of this book, Isabel, is young, beautiful, proud, and arrogant. She comes from America to Gardencourt in England, where she rejects the marriage proposal from Lord Warburton. Then she moves to London, where she rejects another admirer, Goodwood. However, this girl who longs for freedom eventually marries someone who has ulterior motives—Osmond.
