Features: Mark Twain's short stories and novellas typically revolve around a specific plot, employing a fluid and exaggerated style that draws readers into believing the impossible, making them gradually immersed and convinced. Upon reflection, readers realize that this impossibility contains a great deal of truth, as the characters and events in the author's works may exist right around you, or even within you. The corrosive power of money in American society is perhaps most profound. While Mark Twain also unconsciously reveals the dream of sudden wealth among petty bourgeoisie, such as when Tom and Huck discover a treasure trove of stolen gold in the ending of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, his critique of money remains sharp. If the protagonist in A Million Dollars maintains self-control despite sudden wealth, contrasting his pure and loving nature with his ugliness, then The $30,000 Bequest vividly portrays the illusory and ridiculous gold-dream of the poor couple—but we can only smile bitterly, while also feeling deep pity for them, as they are after all innocent small characters! However, in The Person Who Corrupted Hadleyburg, it's almost as if "there are no good people in Hongtong County." The town's slightly more prominent figures are almost all exempt from succumbing to the lure of money. Under such an examination, who could still laugh? We can only pity humanity. From the playfulness where mockery and scorn become art to the cynicism that sharpens social critique, this represents the deepening of Mark Twain's reflections and the maturity of his works. As we appreciate his works, we also delve deeper into his thoughts. Literature cannot exist without language as its medium. The popularity of Mark Twain's works, aside from their fresh ideas and insightful analysis, largely owes to his mastery of language. As everyone knows, the language of daily life among the masses is exceptionally vivid, lively, and full of vitality; but only when adopted and incorporated into works by writers can it mature, stabilize, and spread. Shaw once called Mark Twain a master of language, and this is no exaggeration.
