Patient's question:
What is pediatric idiopathic tropical splenomegaly? What are the main causes and how is it treated? Please provide a detailed explanation. What are the medication contraindications? How should pediatric idiopathic tropical splenomegaly be handled?Doctor's answer:
Clinical manifestations include low-grade fever, anemia (mainly with hemoglobin levels of 60-100 g/L), hepatosplenomegaly, particularly the latter. The bone marrow is markedly hypercellular. The anemia is primarily due to increased blood cells in the spleen, splenomegaly, increased blood volume, blood dilution, and repeated gastrointestinal bleeding, as well as a slight reduction in red blood cell lifespan, which can significantly decrease during pregnancy. In some cases, hemolysis and portal hypertension can be observed.
