Ambiguous neighbor

Author: Yu Jie
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-10-01
Features: In a little over two weeks, the author traveled from south to north and east to west, visiting more than ten cities in Japan of various sizes. He interviewed nearly a hundred people, including Diet members, government officials, union leaders, World War II veterans, writers, university professors, judges, lawyers, journalists, and ordinary citizens. Every day brought new experiences, and every day brought new gains. Such in-depth and extensive interaction with Japanese society is something even students and other individuals who have lived in Japan for many years find difficult to achieve. After this visit, the author realized how little he knew about Japan and understood that understanding Japan is not an easy task. In the author's view, "understanding Japan" is a crucial part of "caring for China."
