Features: I had seen Yuan Quan in many places before, but it was always just a glimpse; I had never truly gotten to know her. This was our first meeting for this book. That time, Yuan Quan had no makeup on. Her usually striking features, which are often emphasized in photos, appeared much softer under the gentle lighting, her smile was somewhat melancholic, and she looked very tired.
During our one-hour meeting, we barely discussed anything serious. But through our casual chit-chats, I gained more confidence in interviewing Yuan Quan—she is quite talkative, unlike what some fellow journalists had warned me about her being difficult to work with. In fact, her natural, authentic, unpretentious, and unassuming nature often leaves her vulnerable, making it easy to get what you want from her gestures and words.
She said, "If you want to know many specific things about me, I’m afraid I’ll disappoint you, because I’ve let many reporters down before. I really can’t tell so many stories. What I remember are often just some feelings, and those are usually very personal. Writing them down might not be very interesting." Her words made me even more interested and excited about the upcoming interview.
