Henry Miller Complete Works -- The Eye of the Universe 7

Author: Henry Miller (USA)
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2001-01-01
Features: This book was published by New Directions Publishing in the United States in 1939. The translation of this book is based on the 1945 London Poetry Anthology edition in the UK. Although this version lacks a preface, the typesetting work by the workers is still meticulous and has not resulted in any textual errors due to Miller's "surreal" style. In this regard, Miller was much luckier than Joyce, and the translator of this book was also luckier than the translator of Ulysses. The Eyes of the Universe is, in terms of its writing style, a collection of miscellaneous works. To say it is "miscellaneous" is not to imply that its content is disorganized, but rather that the included texts belong to various types, such as essays, profiles, reflections, and film scripts. In fact, the content and ideas of this book are no different from those of major works like Tropic of Cancer, and it can even serve as a footnote to them. The thoughts that Miller was not suited to elaborate on in the novel form are fully and freely "expressed" here. To say this is not to suggest that this book does not emphasize artistic form; Miller never forgets to use his surrealism in character profiles or even in serious essays, although he strongly opposed its inappropriate use.
