This book tells you to let your child choose a tree, shrub, or perennial plant, and plant it for them on their anniversary, perhaps on their birthday or other special occasions. After the child writes their name, take them to the library to get a library card. Lie down with your child in a hammock, which will bring happy moments. Making your child feel good is very important for helping them reach their potential, and this is a very modern idea. Only fifty or sixty years ago, there was such a belief—that praising a child or encouraging their pride would make them arrogant and unhumble. In the past few decades, these feelings were not allowed by parents. Fortunately, today, we have a better understanding of the importance of what is now called "self-esteem." A healthy sense of pride, self-esteem, and self-love can change the way we see the world and affect our behavior. Our self-esteem is related to how we treat others' opinions of us. Since we live in an unpredictable world where relationships are always changing, we can never fully control how others see us. When others have a positive attitude toward us, it enhances our good feelings. If others criticize and punish us (even if the criticism is justified), it strengthens our negative feelings and self-doubt. Self-esteem is not a safe deposit box—something you put in and seal away at some point in your life. It's like a bucket with holes (some of us have bigger holes), so it must be continuously refilled to maintain a good level after some of it leaks out. Life's successes fill our bucket with a sense of self-esteem. But the caring and considerate words and actions of the people around us also pour into our bucket. Now, as parents, we should let our children know they are exceptional. Their self-esteem will help them build confidence, and confidence will help them overcome obstacles and move forward
