The "Multifunctional Dictionary for Middle School Students" breaks away from the serious and rigid style of traditional reference books, using color printing and accompanied by over 1,300 cartoon illustrations. These illustrations are highly engaging, not only helping readers better understand the meaning of words and sentences but also making the overall layout of the book lively and dynamic. For each included entry, this book provides carefully compiled phonetic annotations, word formation methods, parts of speech, definitions, and usage, among other practical functions. In terms of phonetic annotations, this book strictly adheres to the Hanyu Pinyin Scheme and provides phonetic annotations for each word entry according to the Basic Rules of Hanyu Pinyin Orthography. In terms of word formation, this book follows authoritative reference books and divides them into two types: compound words and simple words. Compound words are further categorized by their formation types, such as parallel, modifier-head, verb-object, subject-predicate, supplement, and affix (prefix, infix, suffix). Simple words are not marked with types. For idioms and phrases, their structural types are explained as parallel, modifier-head, verb-object, subject-predicate, supplement, serial, and co-subject structures, among others. In terms of part-of-speech annotations, this book follows the Outline of the Middle School Teaching Grammar System (Trial Edition) and references some other grammar works. For differing opinions in the field of grammar, such as the use of verbs, we do not provide lengthy discussions but instead present some linguistic facts. The definitions follow the principles of being concise, practical, and general. In terms of grammar, this book provides at least one example for the usage of each entry, which are simple sentences or phrases, to highlight the function of the central word as much as possible.
