Features: Poetry and ci are among the most profound and enchanting forms of classical Chinese literature. Due to their full embodiment of the characteristics of the Chinese language, they possess both literary and musical qualities as two artistic elements. In their concise form, they contain rich connotations, which has always made them favored by both authors and readers. Their extensive social reference is unmatched by other forms. Zhonghua Book Company has published many collected works of ancient literary works in the past. Selecting the finest poems and ci from renowned masters of all dynasties and compiling new research findings has always been our aspiration to provide society with a systematic and comprehensive poetry and ci collection that combines academic excellence with readability, appealing to both the refined and the general audience. The poems and ci included in this book are based on the edition of "Collected Works of Gong Zizhen" edited by Wang Peizheng and published by the Zhonghua Book Company in 1959 (reprinted twice in 1975 by Hai Nan People's Publishing House and in 1999 by Zhonghua Ancient Books Publishing House using the old printing molds of the 1959 edition). In some cases, revisions were made based on other editions, with explanations provided. The original edition of "Collected Works" contained annotations on differences in old texts, with the better ones selected and included in the notes. The works are arranged in chronological order of their composition. For the annotations, each piece is preceded by a "title explanation" that provides the writing time, background, and a brief analysis of its thoughts and artistry.
