Features: Ma Yinchu (1882-1982), a native of Shengzhou, Zhejiang, was one of the most renowned economists and demographers in 20th-century China. With his century-long life, extraordinary erudition, insight, courage, character, spirit, and the bravery to uphold the dignity of academic truth, he impressed the world and awakened the nation, earning the respect of academic masters and mentors.
Ma's life was fraught with hardships and ups and downs, making him a legendary academic hero. He stood firm on the fundamental and long-term interests of the nation, sacrificing his academic career and even his life to speak truth to power, daring to say what others could not and what others dared not. Truly, he remained unyielding to power and wealth. In the 1940s, he exposed the secrets and crimes of the "Four Great Families" in amassing wealth at the nation's expense, refusing to be intimidated by threats or bribes. As a result, he was arrested and imprisoned for four years. Eventually, thanks to the full support of the Communist Party and the public, he was freed.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he transformed from a captive under the Nationalists into a distinguished guest of the Communists, finally able to realize his lifelong ambitions and dedicate himself to the nation.
