He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Academy of Arts in 1983. In 1989, he went to Japan for study, majoring in Painting Materials and Techniques at the Department of Fine Arts, Osaka National College of Education, and studied egg tempera painting creation in the Egg Tempera Painting Research Laboratory. Since egg tempera is a painting art that flourished in Europe during the Middle Ages, Li Xiaogang, with the help of his advisor, was able to study the restoration techniques of Renaissance egg tempera in Italian workshops every year. After obtaining his master's degree in 1993, Li Xiaogang worked as a lecturer at Kyoto Seika University and the Department of Fine Arts at Osaka National College of Education while continuing his painting career. During this period, his works won multiple awards, and his artistic achievements were recognized and praised in the Japanese art world. His works are unique in expressing abstract emotions through concrete imagery.
