On July 4th, we received several phone calls in a single day, all asking where the "New Reading and Writing" series could be purchased. Two impatient readers even pressed further: When would the second series be published, and how could they read it as soon as possible. We clearly saw the readers' eager and expectant gaze.
Recently, the editorial office has been exceptionally busy. On one hand, we are collaborating with the Central Institute of Educational Sciences to organize a research activity on "Traditional Culture and Chinese Language Learning." On the other hand, we are actively preparing manuscripts for the October issue of "New Reading and Writing" titled "Commemorating Lu Xun." Originally, we planned to shift the editorial work of the second series to the golden autumn of October. However, the readers' encouragement and urging changed our original schedule. The day after the editorial office returned from Changsha for an inspection tour to promote Hunan TV, which is famous for the "Super Girl" show, the editorial work for the series was launched ahead of schedule.
These days are the height of Shanghai's summer heat. Yet, the enthusiasm of our colleagues in the editorial office seems even higher. After more than ten days of hard work and sweat, the manuscripts for the four books—100 Recommended Essays by Famous Authors, 100 Exquisite Short Essays, 100 Masterpieces of Composition, and 100 Beautiful Student Essays—were all completed and promptly delivered to the publisher. This way, before the start of the 2006 academic year, the second series will cheerfully grace the shelves.
Renowned Chinese language educator Professor Lu Shuxiang once pointed out, "To improve students' reading skills, a thin textbook alone is insufficient." "Extensive reading is essential—there should be intensive reading and skimming, and reading 800,000 to 1 million words in a semester is not excessive."
This time, we are launching four books in the second series, totaling approximately 800,000 words, enough for students to enjoy throughout the semester.
Reading is a happiness. In the new academic year, we hope to share the joy of reading with our students, engaging in heartfelt dialogues with outstanding authors, opening up our minds for exchange, and drawing wisdom, strength, and joy from excellent essays.
