Features: Gu Yanwu was a great early Enlightenment thinker in 17th-century China. Like all great thinkers in history, his thought was filled with a philosophical spirit of profound and thorough reflection on public affairs and a severe and profound critique of past intellectual and cultural traditions. Under the historical conditions of overthrowing the Ming Dynasty by the Qing, he was deeply committed to patriotism, seriously summarized the historical lessons of the Ming Dynasty's downfall, and re-examined the economy, politics, and intellectual and cultural traditions of traditional Chinese society. With the foresight of "understanding the essence and applying it" and "drawing lessons from the past to plan for the present," he gathered the outstanding wisdom of scholars and patriots throughout three thousand years of Chinese history who discussed governance and statecraft, critically inherited the new intellectual trends in Chinese society since the late Ming Dynasty, and developed them in line with the demands of the times to construct a blueprint for the future rejuvenation of the nation. As a result, he made new theoretical creations in various fields such as philosophical thought, historical thought, moral and ethical thought, economic and political thought, and literary thought. His theoretical creations and academic achievements not only made him a giant of intellectual and cultural thought on par with Huang Zongxi and Wang Fuzhi but also made him a master of scholarship that bridged the past and the future. Moreover, his work had a profound impact on the intellectual liberation movement and social reform movement in late Qing China. His noble patriotic spirit, independent and unyielding personal integrity, and spirit of social critique remain one of the spiritual forces driving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation to this day.
