Patient's question:
After enrolling in kindergarten, the child was found to be much shorter than her classmates, and after a semester had passed, she hadn't grown much. Could it be a case of dwarfism? I'd like to learn about the causes of dwarfism in children.Doctor's answer:
Children undergoing physical examinations can be diagnosed with short stature if their height is more than two standard deviations below the average height of the normal population of the same race, gender, and age, or below the third percentile. Generally, the causes of short stature include skeletal dwarfism: dwarfism caused by skeletal dysplasia, including cartilage dystrophy and osteogenesis imperfecta; as well as dwarfism associated with chromosomal abnormalities: dwarfism often accompanied by chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome and congenital ovarian dysgenesis syndrome.
