What is the cause of cramps: epilepsy or high fever?

Patient's question:

My child had an EEG done, and it seemed to show questionable sharp-slow complexes. The women's and children's hospital said it could be epilepsy. When the EEG was repeated at the children's hospital, they said it was completely normal. The two waveforms looked almost identical. Around 4 and a half years old. After the first seizure, they took medication, but then stopped. However, there have been no more seizures. Was the seizure caused by epilepsy or a high fever?

Doctor's answer:

Convulsions caused by heat therapy are known as high fever convulsions in preschool children (mainly aged 2-3), which usually occur after school. Therefore, after a fever, it is necessary to immediately stop heat treatment and take anticonvulsant medication. If the age is too old, it will no longer occur. If there is no fever, it is highly suspected that the convulsions are due to epilepsy. It is recommended that the nervous system standardize the treatment, and long-term oral antiepileptic drugs may be required.
