This is a romantic film. Sam (played by Tom Hanks), who is heartbroken over the loss of his wife, feels that his life has lost its former joy and happiness. He tries his best to move on from the shadow of his loss, but he still cannot forget his longing for his wife and the wonderful life they once shared. Sam's son Jonah, however, is worried that his father cannot overcome the grief of losing his loved one and cannot start a new life. Driven by a strong desire to help his father, Jonah calls the radio hotline for psychological counseling and asks a therapist to help his father. When Jonah asks his father to call in and talk to the therapist, Sam, though reluctant, agrees.
Sam expresses his longing for his wife and the pain and sorrow of losing her. Many women who listen to the broadcast immediately develop a liking for Sam and write to him. Annie (played by Meg Ryan) is one of them. After receiving Annie's letter, Jonah immediately believes that Sam and Annie are a perfect match. Jonah then takes on the role of a matchmaker. At the time, Sam and Victoria are just starting to date, and Annie and Walter are also deeply in love. Jonah writes to Annie and arranges to meet at the Empire State Building in New York. However, Sam refuses to go. Jonah decides to go alone. When Sam learns that his son has gone to New York alone, he immediately follows him.
At the Empire State Building, Sam finds Jonah and meets Annie. They instantly hit it off, and the film ends with a happy reunion.
