Features: The Camille is one of the author's finest short stories. The story revolves around a prostitute nicknamed "The Camille" and a group of distinguished industrialists, nobles, merchants, politicians, and two nuns who travel together in a carriage from Le Havre to Rouen during the Franco-Prussian War. On their way, they pass through a small town occupied by the Prussians. Because The Camille refuses to spend the night with a Prussian officer, they are unable to pass through. At first, the passengers traveling with her are indignant on her behalf. However, as the journey is delayed, their attitudes gradually change, starting with temptation, then subtle pressure, and finally outright assault, until she agrees to the Prussian officer's demands. Yet afterward, they all look down upon The Camille with contempt, trying to display their own moral superiority. The novel uses the reference of a prostitute who is ashamed to submit to the enemy to contrast the shamelessness of the aristocratic bourgeoisie, who are only concerned with their own interests and lack national dignity. The novel portrays its characters vividly, delves into profound themes, and showcases exquisite craftsmanship, making it a rare and invaluable artistic treasure.
