Patient's question:
About a week ago, I noticed red bumps in my foreskin while taking a bath, and they occasionally itch. Today, the doctor recommended that I receive intravenous drips for about eight days, with medication similar to cephalexin. Additionally, I was told to use laser treatment and take medication while applying ointment. I’m not sure how to proceed with the treatment?Doctor's answer:
Your condition is considered to be infected with balanitis, which is the inflammation of the glans mucosa, also known as balanitis. The causes of balanitis include:1. Non-infectious factors.
2. Candida infection.
3. Amoeba infection.
4. Trichomonas infection.
Additionally, while the causes of some balanitis are unclear, prolonged foreskin and the irritation from smegma are often associated with the recurrence of balanitis. Treatment generally involves both internal and external approaches.
For acute superficial balanitis and annular purulent balanitis, erythromycin is the first-line treatment, taken four times daily. For trichomoniasis balanitis, metronidazole is the preferred treatment, taken three times daily, alternating for 10 days. For balanitis caused by Candida, it is commonly treated with griseofulvin or itraconazole.
