Is a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level of 15 normal?

Patient's question:

I am 24 years old. Two months ago, I went to the hospital because of discomfort at the urethral opening for a thorough examination. The doctor said I had prostatitis. After two months of treatment, I feel better. Today, I went for a follow-up examination, and the test results showed that the white blood cell count in the prostate was 15. Is this normal?

Doctor's answer:

Prostatitis is caused by inflammatory infections, and during a routine examination of prostatic fluid, an increase in white blood cells may occur. With timely and appropriate treatment and adjustments, prostatitis can heal on its own. If clinical symptoms have disappeared, but there are still 15 white blood cells per high-power field during a prostatic fluid test, this is abnormal. It indicates that the inflammation has not fully healed and requires focused treatment.
