Is the intelligence of children with cerebral palsy normal?

Patient's question:

My child is now just over 4 months old. The child was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. Due to the child's age, treatment has not been possible, but the family has been giving the child regular exercise. I would like to ask, are children with cerebral palsy intelligent?

Doctor's answer:

Abnormalities manifest as infertility, hypotonia, balance disorders, and motor developmental delays. In early childhood, signs such as poor distance perception and intentional tremors can be observed. There are no signs of pyramiding. Intellectual disability is not uncommon but not severe. Pediatric rehabilitation should also include special education tailored to different intellectual levels. Therefore, establishing an institution that integrates medical care, parenting, and education is an excellent model for providing comprehensive and continuous services to children. The key is to exercise and maintain acquired living skills.
