Wuyi transferred and skipped school during her senior high years and engaged in misconduct with her art teacher Du Pi. Her parents' abnormal marital life also had some negative impact on her. Later, Wuyi attended the art college where Du Pi worked and began living together with him. Du Pi eventually married the niece of the department head, Old Feudal, while Wuyi was expelled from school later due to her unserious attitude towards life.
In the text, her roommate's unrestrained behavior, the dorm leader's two-faced nature becoming the stepmother of her classmate Bao Ye, and the academically underachieving Da Men marrying a French wife—all these youthful restlessness and adult absurdity are vividly depicted with a fluid and expressive brushstroke by a 21-year-old girl, making them lifelike and relatable. This group of "communal beetles" are actually the classmates and companions we are familiar with, the boys and girls who parents hold high hopes for. Schools are not, and the increasingly early physical and psychological maturity of young people, coupled with the rise of moral corruption and the loss of sense of responsibility in the face of economic turmoil, is truly shocking and thought-provoking. This is absolutely not a sign of social progress. So, is it a necessary cost of social progress? This book reveals from one angle the necessity and urgency of providing positive guidance to students.
