What causes benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing frequent urination recently, especially at night, and I find it particularly difficult to hold my urine. Every time I feel the urge to urinate, I have to immediately find a restroom, or else I will leak. It's very annoying. I went to the hospital for a thorough examination and was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia. What could be the cause?

Doctor's answer:

Prostate hyperplasia often recurs in elderly individuals around the age of 50, and it is a common condition that significantly reduces the health of older men due to a noticeable reduction in prostate size. Prostate hyperplasia is related to the endocrine system, resulting from fibrosis of the epithelial cells and stromal fibers of the inner urethral glands and suburethral glands in the prostate, along with cystic expansion of the acini and fibrosis of connective tissues and smooth muscles. Because the prostate is precisely located at the bladder outlet, encircling the urethra in a unique position, once fibrosis occurs again, it exerts pressure from all sides on the urethra, obstructing the flow of urine from the bladder.
