For the part on rapid writing of postgraduate entrance examination English application essays, we have made the following changes:
- Simplified reference sentence patterns
- Added application essays such as application forms for admission, job registration forms, leave application forms, and outlines of papers, and appropriately adjusted other application essays. For example, we have added structurally descriptive articles, which are highly practical in real life, and picture-interpretation essays, which are frequently tested. We hope that the revised content will continue to be well-received by candidates.
Starting from 2005, application essays were added to the postgraduate entrance examination essays, so candidates are relatively unfamiliar with writing application essays. Although many have taken the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) multiple times, the grading results show that candidates' proficiency in writing application essays is still poor, and the situation is not optimistic. To address this reality, this book first analyzes the new syllabus and also examines the difficulties of application essays and the problems candidates face, enabling them to know themselves and the situation. The book also provides candidates with detailed preparation suggestions, helping them clarify their preparation direction, focus, and methods.
The new postgraduate entrance examination English syllabus sets very strict and detailed scoring criteria for application essays. The syllabus states, "The scoring of application essays focuses on the coverage of information points, content organization, accuracy of language, appropriateness of format and register. The requirements for grammatical structure and lexical diversity will be adjusted based on specific questions." This indicates that the scoring focus for Part A (short essay writing) is different from that for Part B (short essay writing). The syllabus also specifies, "Keywords from the prompts may be used in the essay, but using phrases or sentences that appear in the prompts will result in deductions." Such strict scoring criteria are rare. This book provides a detailed analysis, pointing out that candidates need to have the ability to convert synonyms and near-synonyms, and to use synonyms or near-synonyms to transform prompts.
Vocabulary is one of the scoring requirements for application essays, but candidates should note that this refers to communicative vocabulary. The book focuses on analyzing the question points of communicative vocabulary and categorizes it. The book emphasizes that communicative vocabulary is crucial for candidates preparing for application essays and that they should focus on strengthening their learning and mastery of professional and everyday vocabulary.
Through a summary and analysis of classroom teaching, tutoring, and grading, we have found that candidates can be divided into three types in terms of application essay writing. This book provides a detailed analysis of these three types, making preparation more targeted.
Since the genres of postgraduate entrance examination application essays are very broad, it is impossible to cover everything, so this book focuses on Part 7 to discuss various genres (nearly 30 types) that are likely to be tested, along with their writing methods and techniques. All application essay examples in this book are selected from foreign application essay writing materials and teaching resources by foreign experts, allowing candidates to learn word choice and sentence construction directly from authentic English, thereby mastering more natural and accurate language expressions for application essays and better analyzing and understanding the information points.
All the examples in this book have been carefully selected after targeted research, and we believe they will be of great help to candidates. The book also selects some key communicative vocabulary from the new syllabus vocabulary list for candidates to refer to, enabling them to focus on mastering them. The book provides specific learning guidance, helping candidates achieve twice the result with half the effort when learning and using communicative vocabulary, thereby maximizing learning efficiency and preparation capabilities.
We hope that candidates can benefit from the study of this book and that it will provide practical help in improving their writing skills for postgraduate entrance examination application essays. As long as candidates use this book diligently and engage in hard and systematic writing practice, we are confident that their application essay writing skills will improve significantly.
