Features: This textbook is revised based on the characteristics of the Preliminary Reading Course of "College English" and the English proficiency of the teaching. The revision follows the following guiding principles:
1. The content of the selected materials has been appropriately adjusted and supplemented, with gradually increasing difficulty, information volume, and variety of topics. Through a certain amount of reading, students' sense of language, reading speed, and preliminary mastery of reading skills are enhanced, laying a foundation for entering the first level of study.
2. When compiling various exercises, attention is paid to gradually cultivating students' abilities to analyze, summarize, synthesize, and infer during the reading process, in coordination with the reading teaching of the intensive reading course.
3. The selected materials are relatively easier than the corresponding intensive reading texts and are supplemented with necessary annotations to facilitate smooth reading.
4. Most of the materials in the textbook are original texts, slightly edited or rewritten, ensuring language and writing norms while being adapted to the English proficiency of the preliminary level students.
5. The selected materials strive for novelty in content, a wide range of topics, diverse genres, and a balance of knowledge and interest.
6. Considering the differences in students' reading abilities, the reading volume of each book is slightly higher than the indicators specified in the syllabus. This textbook is divided into two levels: Preliminary and Intermediate. Each level includes 36 selected texts, with a small number of annotations for each lesson, accompanied by several exercises to test students' comprehension of the texts. The answers to the exercises and a master vocabulary list are provided at the end of the book. To complement the intensive reading course, each level is organized into 12 units, with three lessons per unit.
