His original hometown was Yinxian, Zhejiang. During the late Qing Dynasty, his ancestors served as a Vice Commissioner of Anhui, and the family moved to Anhui. After the 1911 Revolution, they settled in Shanghai. Mr. Tong Shuyi was a modern Chinese historian, achieving remarkable accomplishments in the fields of ancient history, classical studies, and psychiatric research. Born into an official family, he suffered from poor health in his childhood and received traditional education at home. With his extraordinary memory, he memorized several classical texts, which he could still recite fluently in his later years. This laid an extremely solid academic foundation for his scholarly pursuits. In 1929, Mr. Tong began studying the "Discussions on Ancient History" and was deeply influenced by it, as evidenced in his self-composed chronicle. When he started writing in 1933, he stated, "Gradually adopted the approach of the 'Discussions on Ancient History' in studying classics and history, with Gu Jiegang as my private mentor." In 1934, he met Mr. Gu Jiegang in Hangzhou and agreed to become his research assistant in Beijing the following year.
