Patient's question:
Got balanitis, how should it be treatedDoctor's answer:
The treatment for balanitis should be targeted at the cause of inflammation, so it varies from person to person. The basic principle of Western medicine treatment is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Generally, it involves both internal and external treatment. For acute superficial balanitis and circinate purulent balanitis, erythromycin and tetracycline are the first-line treatments, usually taken at 0.5g per dose, four times a day. For trichomoniasis balanitis, metronidazole is the first-line treatment, taken at 0.2g per dose, three times a day, alternating for 10 days. For balanitis caused by Candida albicans, it is commonly treated with griseofulvin or itraconazole. Griseofulvin is taken at 100,000 to 200,000 units per dose, twice a day, while itraconazole is taken at 100mg per dose, twice a day, for a total of 7 days.
