This book is the culmination of his lifelong study of Western cultural studies since 1500 and is also a classic work of cultural discourse in the 20th century. Critics have hailed this book as a milestone in the history of cultural creation. The book discusses nearly five hundred years of Western social and cultural life from 1500 to the present, including: political systems (such as monarchy), religion, social thought, philosophy, literature, music, art, technological inventions, folklore, and social life, covering everything in its scope. From the roots of the Renaissance to rap music, the author narrates everything in a captivating manner, integrating the reflections he has accumulated over his long life, making the book rich in content and unique charm. He believes that the era we live in is a period of cultural decline. He points out that there are many frustrating factors at present, such as a stagnant political scene, rigid school education, the spread of individualism, and the prevalence of highly abstract art, and so on. However, cultural decline does not mean more disappointment than hope, but rather may become a source of renewal for the West. This idea runs through the entire book, becoming its shining point.
