Features: This book examines the colonial history and society of Germany's occupation and rule over Qingdao from a completely new perspective. It is a thought-provoking work, as the author, based on extensive historical materials, argues that the subject of colonial history is composed of the colonial rulers, the colonized people, and the intersection of the two. Any one-sided examination or research cannot fairly narrate Sino-German relations during the colonial period. Accordingly, the author believes that Germany's colonial rule in the Jiaozhou Bay concession in China was the result of the interaction between conflicting forces such as colonial domination and resistance to invasion, cultural mission and national self-strengthening. In particular, the resistance and adaptation, loss and construction of the Chinese side played a major role in this interaction. This aspect has not been given sufficient attention in previous German Sinology and historical research. Additionally, this work employs "postmodernism" theory and interdisciplinary methods to conduct a new "deconstruction" of the research community's established concepts, methods, and disciplinary boundaries. By analyzing the colonial governance measures of the German Empire and the direct or indirect resistance methods of the Chinese government and people, it provides a well-reasoned and evidence-based discussion of the mutual contact, mutual understanding, and interaction between China and Germany from 1897 to 1914 in military, political, religious, and cultural aspects surrounding the issue of Jiaozhou Bay.
