Features: 2. Several Unclear Concerns About Genetically Modified Foods
The advantages of genetically modified foods are self-evident (as discussed earlier), but due to the lack of large-scale and long-term scientific research data, experts worldwide currently express deep concerns about the risks or potential harms of genetically modified organisms. These concerns are primarily focused on several "unclear" issues.
(1) Unclear Concerns About Food Safety
Since the advent of genetically modified foods five years ago, over 200 million people worldwide have consumed thousands of varieties of genetically modified foods, and no food safety incidents have been reported. However, a few cases abroad have been found to cause allergic reactions in experimental animals, leading to the suspension of their commercial production. Currently, the development of genetically modified foods relies solely on animal testing, with no human trials or long-term observations.
(2) Unclear Concerns About Bioaccumulation
According to the Health News, the enrichment of beneficial substances in the food chain or the accumulation of harmful substances is extremely crucial for the health of higher-level organisms. Currently, most genetically modified crops are used as feed. These genetically modified organisms incorporate pest-resistant or weed-resistant genes they originally lacked. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and systematic scientific conclusions regarding the enrichment changes in their organisms, the effects after being enriched by livestock, and the impact on humans who consume livestock.
(3) Unclear Concerns About the Relationship Between Medicinal and Food Products
Genetically modified technology can be used to establish animal and plant pharmaceutical libraries. For example, eating a tomato can prevent hepatitis B. However, whether such genetically modified drugs pose risks to the human body still requires long-term research and monitoring to be fully understood.
(4) Unclear Concerns About Global Regulation
Currently, many countries with a relatively high volume of genetically modified bioproducts adopt a "loose externally, strict internally" policy, exporting genetically modified products to some developing countries without disclosing related concerns. This phenomenon is highly unfavorable for protecting global biosafety.
Indeed, the impact of genetically modified foods on the biological chain still requires long-term observation and research by humans. For consumers, the "right to know" is extremely important.
