Patient's question:
In the past two months, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain, a heavy and distended feeling, some urinary frequency and urgency, and a dribbling sensation when urinating. My prostate is very red and swollen, and my libido has decreased. I haven't been sleeping well at night. I went to the hospital for a thorough examination and was diagnosed with a prostatic cyst. What should I do now that I have a prostatic cyst?Doctor's answer:
Prostatic cysts are caused by cystic changes in the prostate gland due to congenital or acquired reasons. Congenital cysts result from incomplete atrophy of the Wolffian ducts, which fuse at the midline and form a deep diverticulum or cyst below the bladder, opening posteriorly into the prostatic urethra. Acquired cysts are due to the rigidity of the prostatic stroma causing incomplete or intermittent obstruction of the acini, gradually leading to thickening of the acinar epithelium and ultimately resulting in retention cysts. They can be located anywhere within the prostate or extend to the neck of the bladder, with a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters.
