What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Patient's question:

At night, I keep having to go to the bathroom, and I have to use the restroom multiple times each night. Also, recently I've noticed that daytime urination has reappeared, and it's very painful. I went to the hospital yesterday for a thorough examination, and the doctor said it's a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Doctor's answer:

Prostate hyperplasia refers to the reduction in the volume of tissues and organs caused by the continuous increase in the number of cells, which is the result of increased mitotic division activity due to various reasons. The human prostate is no exception. From birth to before puberty, the growth and development of the prostate are slow. After puberty, the growth rate slows down, reaching its peak of growth and development around the age of 24. Between the ages of 30 and 45, its volume remains relatively stable. Afterward, some individuals tend to expand, while the glandular volume decreases.
