Supporting Yang is based on the concept of Yang leading, which is essentially a dominant Yang ideology that permeates the entirety of Chinese culture. The foundation of Supporting Yang is the principle of Yang leading and Yin following. This foundational concept has been deeply contemplated by the renowned TCM scholar Professor Liu Lihong, who incorporated it into his book Thinking about TCM. However, the challenge has always been how to apply this concept in clinical practice and how to effectively utilize it. This has been a persistent issue for Professor Liu. In 2005, thanks to the connection with Thinking about TCM, Professor Liu had the opportunity to meet Lu Chonghan, the long-awaited inheritor of the "Huo Sheng" (Fire God) school, and ultimately became his disciple. After becoming his disciple, the master either instructed him through reasoning or demonstrated through case studies. Although it was only a short period of time, the insights gained from this experience can only be truly understood by those who have endured numerous hardships. Today, with the publication of Lu Master’s Lecture Notes, it is truly a cause for celebration for many sincere medical aspirants who have struggled to find a path into the field! As the title Lecture Notes suggests, it is a spontaneous and heartfelt expression, not necessarily systematic or complete. But precisely because the master is in the "state of inspiration," his words are not ordinary or superficial. For those with a sincere heart who can follow this path, there will be no major obstacles in their journey of medical learning.
Lu Chonghan comes from a family of TCM practitioners, studying under his grandfather, Master Lu Zhuzhi, and his uncle, Master Lu Yongding. Both Lu Zhuzhi and Lu Yongding were known as "Huo Sheng" (Fire Gods), esteemed figures in Sichuan and renowned throughout the country. Lu Zhuzhi, in addition to his family background, also studied under the late Qing dynasty TCM master Zheng Qin’an and mastered his teachings in full. In clinical practice, he skillfully used ginger, cinnamon bark, and aconite to treat severe and chronic illnesses, deeply understanding the essence of Supporting Yang and also earning the title of "Huo Sheng."
This book is the first in the "Lu Huo Sheng Medical Collection Series." It is primarily compiled from Lu Master’s past academic lectures and recorded dialogues between teacher and disciple, offering clear and profound explanations of the theory, methods, formulas, and medications of the Qin’an Lu family’s Supporting Yang school.
