Features: This book is one of the series of mathematics textbooks for engineering majors in Henan Province facing the 21st century. During the writing process, it was mainly referenced based on the "Overall Goals and Requirements of the 21st Century Teaching Content and Curriculum System Reform" issued by the Ministry of Education, as well as the "National Unified Entrance Examination Syllabus for Master's Degree Candidates in Mathematics" formulated by the Ministry of Education. Combining the characteristics of engineering majors, the writing of this textbook focuses on the following guiding principles:
(1) Emphasizing application. For students from non-mathematics majors, the main purpose of studying probability theory is to master a mathematical tool that can be used to solve relevant problems in their respective professional fields. Based on this guiding principle, unnecessary mathematical derivations are omitted, and relevant concepts and main conclusions are explained as much as possible in the context of engineering backgrounds.
(2) Focusing on the mastery of basic methods and the understanding of concepts. Many students who have studied probability theory believe that this course is difficult, and classical probability is a major challenge. This is a misunderstanding. The author has been teaching probability theory and mathematical statistics for over 20 years and has also participated in research on multiple practical application projects. The author believes that grasping concepts and correctly applying basic methods are the keys to solving engineering practical problems. For students from non-mathematics majors, spending too much effort on examples and exercises that are more like intellectual games may be somewhat unproductive, which can also be verified by recent graduate entrance examination questions. Based on this perspective, this book focuses on explaining concepts and training methods, and significant adjustments have been made to the design of examples and exercises.
