Life at school allows her to experience the warmth and coldness of being loved and humiliated. When she believes happiness has truly come, she leaves again for a distant place due to a madwoman. Jane Eyre is one of the outstanding novels of 19th-century Britain. Through the description of Jane Eyre's brief 20-year life, it showcases the political landscape and inequalities brought by social status differences of the time, becoming a timeless masterpiece. Jane Eyre allows readers to experience the social customs of Western society, represented by Britain, during that era, and to feel the thoughts and struggles of the protagonist, Jane Eyre—a well-educated but socially humble woman. Through Jane Eyre's winding and rich emotional journey, readers can appreciate her understanding and practice of love, friendship, freedom, equality, and wealth.
How could Jane, a poor and plain family governess, attract the intelligent and wealthy Rochester and make him love her so deeply? It was due to her extraordinary temperament and sharp mind, especially her noble character! Her sincere and profound love for Rochester was not entirely selfish. When she learned that Rochester's wife was still alive, she left him resolutely! It was precisely because of her deep and steadfast love that she refused to let this pure and sacred love be shadowed by any darkness. She silently endured all her pain and rejected St. John's marriage proposal. In her eyes, a marriage without love was not only terrible but also contemptible, no matter how noble its facade might be.
Of course, Jane's choices at life's crossroads depended on her personality. The author placed a brave heart beneath Jane's gentle and refined exterior, not only enabling her to resist the violence and abuse of her cousin but also allowing her to face the pressure of the upper class with self-respect and confidence (such as in the presence of noble guests at Thornfield). She stubbornly resisted the soul-shackling disguised as religion—although the author used the so-called "supernatural force" to let Jane break free from this shackle, this idea and behavior were already considered rebellious in the values and religious beliefs of the time. It can be said that the author not only sang the most beautiful hymn to pure love in the novel but also dared to offer bold new interpretations of class concepts and equality awareness, and even made a rebellious note of the religious thought of the time.
Marx ranked the author of Jane Eyre alongside Dickens and Sacre, giving them high praise, calling them "those who revealed to the world the political and social truths." This is also the reason why Jane Eyre surpasses ordinary love novels and has become immortal.
