Features: In recent years, readers in China have shown increasing interest in American literature. English departments in major universities have established courses on American literature selections and related subjects. However, many selection textbooks often begin with the 19th century or earlier, while American literature rose to prominence in the 20th century, especially after World War II, and became dominant in the world literary arena. For this reason, we decided to compile a separate selection of 20th-century American literature, providing a textbook for teachers offering elective courses and enabling senior students or graduate students to understand the development of modern and contemporary American literature, as well as the evolution of American society and culture. This will not only broaden their knowledge but also enhance their appreciation of literature, cultivate their ability to analyze and research issues, and lay a foundation for writing graduation theses. During the compilation process, we adhered to the following principles: First, in selecting writers, we included those who have already become classics, such as the novelists Hemingway, Faulkner, and Fitzgerald, as well as the poets Pound, Williams, and Stevens. Second, considering the diverse development of American literature, the writers we selected not only hold a certain position in literary history but also represent various themes, techniques, styles, races, and genders. Third, we believe that a good textbook should serve as a guide rather than be all-encompassing, leaving ample space for teachers and students to think and explore.
