A Thousand Years of History in Ningxia

Author: Hu Xuexiang, Men Junhua, Hu Zhicun (editors)

Publishing Date: 2006-03-01
Features: This book consists of 200 articles, arranged in chronological order according to the development of Ningxia's history (with minor adjustments in some places). If these 200 articles are "points" in Ningxia's history, then connecting these "points" (even though some historical events are not continuous) forms a "surface"—a systematic and comprehensive reading material on Ningxia's history. To this end, the authors often use "related links" in the text to connect the "points," demonstrating the systematicity and coherence. Additionally, historical events in ancient Ningxia were not isolated but were interconnected with the national situation at the time. Therefore, when writing, attention was paid to placing Ningxia's history within the broader context of national history to help readers understand the causes, effects, and overall context. There are four points to note when compiling this book.
1. The historical events and figures recorded in this book are based on historical records (including the achievements of modern research) and contain no fictional or dramatized elements.
2. The time frame: the upper limit begins in ancient times, and the lower limit ends with the liberation of Ningxia in 1949 (with some events extending slightly into 1950).
3. Historical chronology is presented as follows: Before the Qing Dynasty (inclusive), the lunar calendar (Gregorian calendar) is used in principle, with the Gregorian calendar added as a note; the Republic of China and later periods use the Anno Domini (AD) calendar. All civil years written in Chinese characters are lunar dates, while those written in Arabic numerals are Gregorian dates.
4. This book aims to be a popular historical reading material. Therefore, when using ancient literary phrases, modern language is generally avoided for most quotations, except for a few exceptions. Due to the nature of the book's format, it was not possible to cite every source, but a "Main References" section is appended at the end. Special thanks are extended for this explanation.
