The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) has been introduced preliminarily in courses such as "Modern Chinese." This textbook uses IPA for analyzing and explaining phonetic issues and for transcribing examples. Additionally, it provides further introductions to IPA when discussing methods of Chinese dialect surveys. However, since the main component of IPA teaching involves face-to-face pronunciation and listening exercises, which are difficult to achieve in comprehensive thematic courses and distance learning, this course does not require students to master the pronunciation of IPA or the transcription of phonetic symbols using IPA.
