Can surgery treat varicocele?

Patient's question:

Can surgery treat varicocele? I want to ask what should a man with varicocele do? Can it be treated? I want to get pregnant, but I have been trying for nearly 2 years and have not been able to conceive. I had a thorough examination and was told I have varicocele. So I want to ask what I should do and whether it can be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Treatment for varicocele, mild cases can be managed conservatively, which involves resting, wearing tight underwear, increasing physical activity, and appropriately using blood-activating medications. However, moderate to severe cases, or those accompanied by infertility or abnormal semen, require surgery. This is because varicocele obstructs blood, leading to circulatory disorders in the testicles, impairing their normal sperm production and excretion functions. Over time, it can cause the testicles to swell and lose all functionality.
