Publish Date: November 18, 1997
Features:
1. This book selects 1,042 major, significant, and cases from ancient China (from the Shang and Zhou dynasties to the late Qing dynasty) as well as various famous cases with certain cognitive significance and reflecting investigative experience, arranged in six volumes according to historical periods and chronological order. Additionally, 126 famous cases selected from classical literary works are included in an appendix.
2. To facilitate readers in reading, analyzing, and researching the cases, each case consists of three parts: an introduction, the case text, and the original text. The introduction and original text are marked with square brackets “[]”, while the case text is translated into colloquial language, primarily using literal translation and occasionally free translation. The appendix provides only a summary of the plot for each case to save space.
3. The materials for this book are primarily based on historical records such as the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) and the "Twenty-Four Histories" in the dynastic chronicles, as well as annalistic works like the Zuo Zhuan and the Zizhi Tongjian, and historical archives and unearthed artifacts. Supplementary materials include works like the Mirror for Judges and unofficial histories or notes, along with recently published historical archives.
4. All quoted original texts are annotated with their source books for reference. If there are errors in the original texts, they are not directly corrected. Instead, incorrect or added characters are marked with parentheses “()”, while corrected or supplemented characters are marked with square brackets “[]”. For example, "" is corrected to "()[]". In the case text, ellipses “…” are used to indicate omissions from the original text, while the case text is written continuously without ellipses.
5. At the end of the book, there is an "Index of Historical Criminal Officials" and an "Index of Criminal Names," along with a "Name Index," to assist readers in quick reference.
