Features: Entering the 21st century, especially with China's accession to the WTO, the international competition in the information industry will become even more intense. Although China's information industry has achieved rapid development by the end of the 20th century, it still has a significant gap compared to developed countries, as well as countries like India and Ireland. The development speed of national informatization and the international competitiveness of the information industry will ultimately depend on the quality and quantity of information science and technology talent. To accelerate the cultivation of a large number of high-quality information technology talents, the Ministry of Education has taken an important measure to introduce outstanding foreign textbooks on information science and technology and promote English teaching or bilingual education in schools with the necessary conditions. For this purpose, the Ministry of Education has requested Higher Education Press to first carry out pilot work on introducing information science and technology textbooks. At the same time, two requirements have been proposed: high quality and low price. With the efforts of Higher Education Press and the expert group of introduced information science and technology textbooks, after a relatively short period of time, more than 20 introduced textbooks have been published successively. Since their publication, these textbooks have received widespread praise. Many of them are classic works by renowned experts and professors in the field of global information science and technology, as well as outstanding works reflecting the latest advancements in information science and technology, representing the top level of information science and technology education worldwide at present. Moreover, the prices are also highly competitive, comparable to domestically compiled textbooks of the same type. This textbook introduction project has been jointly organized by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Press, with extensive participation from domestic experts and professors in the field of information science and technology. Based on multiple selections of a large number of foreign textbooks and referencing the curriculum designs of renowned universities both domestically and internationally, the textbooks have been systematically introduced. Among them, Professor Silberchatz's classic work "Operating System Concepts," published by John Wiley & Sons and serving as the Vice President of the Information Science Research Center at Bell Labs, was introduced after repeated negotiations and significant efforts. Mr. William Stallings has written a series of information science and technology textbooks that are highly popular in the United States, with several of them receiving the Computer Science and Engineering Textbook Award from the Association for Computing Machinery. Two of his works are included in this batch of introduced textbooks. Professor Jiawei Han, a Chinese scholar who studied in the United States, has authored "Data Mining," a landmark work in the field. The classic textbook "Introduction to Algorithms," co-authored by Thomas Cormen of Dartmouth College and scholars from MIT and Columbia University, was published in its second edition in 2001 after 11 years of refinement. Professor James Kurose, currently teaching at Massachusetts University in the United States, has received the Outstanding Teacher or Teaching Award ten times across three universities in the U.S. His edited work "Computer Networking" has been widely acclaimed for its innovative structure and advanced content. In terms of reducing the prices of introduced textbooks, Higher Education Press has made extensive and meticulous efforts. This series of introduced textbooks embodies the characteristics of authority, systematicity, advancement, and economy. This book describes the conceptual and engineering principles of designing and implementing database and transaction processing application software, focusing on how to construct database application systems and comprehensively introducing the theory of relational databases and relational query languages. Through the study of running cases, it explores practical applications, allowing readers to experience the design, implementation, and testing of database management systems firsthand. It discusses important software engineering issues that arise when implementing transaction processing application systems and covers transaction processing and security issues arising from e-commerce. This book is suitable for courses on database systems, database management and design, and advanced databases.
