Features: The concept of "Contemporary Chinese Literature" adopted in this book refers to Chinese literature from July 1949, when the First National Congress of Chinese Writers and Artists was held in Beijing, to the end of the 20th century. It is a part of 20th-century Chinese literature but also has relative independence. In the late 1940s, intense political/military actions divided China into two parts: the mainland and Taiwan. Due to different social and cultural environments, the literatures of the two regions evolved differently. This book provides a brief overview of their respective situations. Contemporary literature in mainland China can be roughly divided into two periods, with the turning point being the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976. The overall trend of the first period is the establishment and continuous reinforcement of literary unification, while the overall trend of the second period is the gradual disintegration of literary unification and the initial formation of diversification.
