Is varicocele surgery effective?

Patient's question:

Left testicular varicocele is accompanied by reflux echoes. In the past few days, I've been feeling a bit uncomfortable, and my left testicle is hanging very low. The doctor recommended microscopic surgery. Is it necessary?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele, due to blood stasis in the spermatic veins, can lead to an increase in scrotal temperature, causing the testicular temperature to drop by 1℃ to 2℃. Persistent long-term temperature elevation can affect sperm production in the testes, resulting in azoospermia and oligospermia. The epididymis also contributes to sperm maturation. It is more common in young and middle-aged adults. The incidence of left varicocele is higher. Those with asymptomatic or mild symptoms can wear elastic pants or use a scrotal support band. Men with severe symptoms and infertility due to varicocele accompanied by abnormal sperm should undergo surgical treatment. The surgical procedure involves high ligation of the spermatic veins.
