What should be done if a boy's testicles are swollen?

Patient's question:

My child is six years old this year. Today, I suddenly noticed that one of his testicles was swollen. I asked him if it hurt, and he said it was a bit painful. I started to worry right away. When I touched it, it felt hard, and I don't know what's going on?

Doctor's answer:

If the patient experiences swelling in the scrotum again, it should be considered as hydrocele of the tunica vaginalis. Secondly, it should be considered as orchitis or scrotal edema, and medication to combat infection and stabilize microcirculation should be used. It is recommended to first go to a formal hospital for a thorough examination.
Attention should be paid to careful observation in cases of infantile scrotal enlargement:
1. Whether the swollen scrotum is on one side or both sides;
2. How the swelling changes during crying (reduces) and when the child is calm and lying down (increases);
3. How the swollen scrotum tends to grow larger as the child grows.
