Features: In the late 20th century, information science and technology, represented by computer and communication technologies, had a profound impact on the world economy, science and technology, military, education, and culture. The rapid popularization and application of information science and technology drove the vigorous development of the global information industry, bringing substantial returns to many countries. Entering the 21st century, especially with China's accession to the WTO, the international competition in the information industry will become even more intense. Although China's information industry achieved rapid development in the late 20th century, it still has a significant gap compared to developed countries, as well as countries like India and Ireland. The development speed of national informatization and the international competitiveness of the information industry will ultimately depend on the quality and quantity of information science and technology talent. To accelerate the cultivation of a large number of high-quality information technology professionals, the Ministry of Education has taken an important measure: introducing outstanding foreign textbooks on information science and technology and promoting English teaching or bilingual education in schools with the necessary conditions. For this purpose, the Higher Education Press was tasked with pioneering the introduction of information science and technology textbooks. At the same time, two requirements were proposed: high quality and low price. Through the efforts of the Higher Education Press and the expert group for introducing foreign information science and technology textbooks, over 20 introduced textbooks were published in a relatively short period of time.
After their publication, this series of textbooks received widespread acclaim. Many of them are classic works by renowned experts and professors in the field of global information science and technology, as well as outstanding works reflecting the latest advancements in the field. They represent the top level of information science and technology education worldwide and are also highly affordable, comparable in price to domestically compiled textbooks. This textbook introduction project was jointly organized by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and the Higher Education Press, with extensive participation from domestic experts and professors in the field of information science and technology. After multiple rounds of careful selection from a large number of foreign textbooks and referencing the curriculum designs of renowned universities both domestically and internationally, the textbooks were systematically introduced. Among them, Professor Silberschatz's classic work Operating System Concepts, published by John Wiley & Sons and serving as the Vice President of the Information Science Research Center at Bell Labs, was successfully introduced after extensive negotiations and efforts. Mr. William Stallings, who authored a highly popular series of information science and technology textbooks in the United States, with several of his works receiving the Computer Science and Engineering Textbook Award from the Association of Computing Machinery, has two of his books included in this introduced series. Professor Jiawei Han, a Chinese scholar who studied in the United States, authored Data Mining, a landmark work in the field. Introduction to Algorithms, a classic jointly compiled by Thomas Cormen of Dartmouth College and scholars from MIT and Columbia University, was published in its second edition in 2001 after 11 years of refinement. Professor James Kurose, currently teaching at the University of Massachusetts in the United States and having won the Outstanding Teacher or Teaching Excellence Award ten times across three U.S. universities, edited Computer Networking, which has been widely praised for its innovative structure and advanced content.
In the effort to reduce the prices of introduced textbooks, the Higher Education Press has made substantial and meticulous efforts. This series of introduced textbooks embodies the characteristics of authority, systematicity, advancement, and affordability.
