Features: This book is adapted from Chapter 14 of Probability Theory in Advanced Mathematics (1978 edition) edited by the Department of Mathematics, Tongji University. The adaptation was carried out by Ye Runxiu of Tongji University, who referred to the relevant sections on Probability Theory in the Teaching Syllabus for Engineering Mathematics reviewed and approved by the Committee on the Compilation and Review of Engineering Mathematics Textbooks for Higher Education in 1980. The adaptation included modifications, additions, and supplementary content, as well as the inclusion of a section on correlation coefficients and numerous exercises, to better suit the needs of higher industrial colleges as a textbook for Engineering Mathematics—Probability Theory. The revised manuscript was still reviewed by Professor Lu Zifen as the chief reviewer, with Sheng Chou, Sun Yulin, and others participating in the review. The book covers permutations and combinations, sets, random events, the probability of random events, conditional probability, the independence of events and the independence of experiments, one-dimensional random variables, two-dimensional random variables, the function of random variables and their distributions, and the mathematical characteristics of random variables. The book also includes answers to exercises at the end. It is well-organized and easy to self-study, making it suitable as a self-study reference for engineering technicians.
