Features: Elementary Listening is a guided, progressive listening textbook divided into three volumes. It is designed for first and second-year students of English majors at higher education institutions, as well as for students from other disciplines, teacher education colleges, television universities, and self-learners. The book has been designated as the listening course textbook for the satellite television English program launched in 1988.
Elementary Listening is Volume 1, suitable for learners who have mastered 1,000–1,500 English vocabulary words and basic grammar knowledge but have not received specialized listening training. The book is divided into 22 units, each consisting of five parts:
Part 1 focuses on phonetic discrimination, stress, and connected speech exercises. Through systematic foundational listening training, it lays the groundwork for further learning.
Part 2 includes picture identification, multiple-choice, and short-term memory exercises. The exercises are arranged progressively, enabling students to gradually understand simple English that expresses complete ideas.
Part 3 features listening practice, using fill-in-the-blank, sentence dictation, and paragraph dictation formats to train students' comprehensive listening skills.
Part 4 offers speaking and listening exercises, employing storytelling repetition to develop students' narrative skills and lay the foundation for dictation.
Part 5 provides listening appreciation, using formats such as slides and lectures to introduce cultural backgrounds and customs of the UK and the US while offering listening practice materials.
The book is accompanied by a teacher's manual, which includes exercise answers and additional listening materials for extracurricular practice or appreciation. The book has been reviewed by Mei Renyi of Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Associate Professor Qiang Youruan of Beijing Institute of Education has provided valuable suggestions for its development.
